Origin

Groot first appeared in Tales to Astonish #13 in 1960, three years before the modern Marvel age really started. The original Groot was a monster-of-the-month from a pre-superhero anthology — an alien tree from Planet X who came to Earth, threatened a small town, and was driven off. He stayed shelved for decades.

Comic history

The Groot we recognize today is a 2006 Keith Giffen reinvention from Annihilation: Conquest, where he was retooled as a Guardian of the Galaxy alongside Rocket. The James Gunn films built on the Giffen version and locked the character into the cultural form he has today: a sentient tree with limited speech, infinite regeneration, and one of the most reliable emotional payoffs in the entire Marvel catalog.

Groot in Marvel Rivals

Groot in Marvel Rivals is the single highest-HP hero in the entire game at 850 — no other character carries that much. He is the wall-builder. His kit is built around denying space — placing Ironwood Walls to bisect a room, dropping Thornlash Walls to cut off retreats, and using Strangling Prison to lock targets in place while his Duelists collapse on them. He is the single best counter to high-mobility Duelists because his walls do not care how fast you are.

Abilities

Vine Strike is the basic attack; Spore Bomb is his ranged pressure tool. The walls are the defining mechanic — Ironwood for hard cover, Thornlash for damage, and Strangling Prison as the ultimate lockdown. Wall placement is a learned skill, and the difference between a 30% Groot and a 60% Groot is almost entirely how well they read the map.

Spotting Groot in Rivaldle

Groot is unmistakable in Silhouette and Pixelation Modes — broad, hulking, brown with green accents. In Emoji Mode, the tree emojis are a giveaway. In Classic Mode, the Flora Colossus species cell is unique to him — if any guess returns a yellow or red on species against your Groot guess, you can rule him out immediately for every other character. His 850 HP is also unique in the database; an HP-up arrow that points above 750 essentially names him in one column.

Try the puzzle

Groot is a possible answer in every Rivaldle mode. The fastest way to spot them is usually a combination of two columns in Classic Mode plus a quick read of the silhouette or pixelation. Once you get a feel for the database fingerprints — the unique species cell, the unique origin year, the unique HP value — most heroes can be solved in two or three guesses.
